Devon cruise to 73-run win over Lions

A THREE-wicket burst from Nick Watkin helped put Devon in the driving seat in yesterday’s 73-run win over the Devon Lions at Axminster.

With Matt Thompson and Rob Holman both making half-centuries, Devon reached 234 for seven before their 45 overs ran out.

The Lions – Devon’s a mixture of high-performance squad youngsters and possibles drawn from the county league – were 42 for one in reply and motoring along nicely thanks to some powerful blows by opener Dan Bowser.

Bowser’s demise, run out by Thompson attempting a silly single which was never on to start with, prompted a collapse that killed the game stone dead.

Five wickets went for 12 runs with Watkin taking three for 13 in six overs,

Watkin had Max Curtis lbw then straightened up Matt Golding and Connor Bryan to bowl the pair of them,

Jason Hall took a full-pitched delivery from Liam Lewis on the pad and he had to go as well.

A fightback was inspired by Rhys Davies and skipper Will Murray, whose stand of 66 for the seventh wicket ensured the final score was respectable.

Devon 234-7 (R J Holman 63, M W Thompson 59, L J Lewis 29; M Curtis 2-28), Devon Lions 161-9 (R Davies 48; N S Watkin 3-34, R Bougourd 2-31, L J Lewis 2–29). Devon bt Devon Lions by 73 runs.
