Warwickshire too good for Lions

DEVON Lions went down by 67 runs to Warwickshire 2nd XI at Kings Heath in Birmingham on Sunday in their final game of the season.

What should have been a 50-overs-each game was slimmed down to 41 a side after a two-hour rain break.

Warwickshire, 136 for three  at the break from 30 overs, kicked on to make 254 for five with opener Tom Burton making a fine 90.

Burton looked good for a ton or more until he was brilliantly caught by a flying Andy Fairbairn at point.

Sharp fielding by Barney Huxtabke accounted for Warwickshire’s Shabir Oakborn in similar fashion on 50.

And keeper Cameron Grainger was alert enough – and accurate enough to run out Bassett Zaman on 46 with a throw to the bowling end.

Devon got the worse possible start when Huxtable was lbw first ball.

Zac Bess went caught at point then Sam Wyatt-Haines followed him back to the pavilon for six.

Luke Bess (40) and Will Gater (36) got the score up to 130 for five with 11 overs to go, but scoreboard pressure was mounting and Devon could not keep up.

Skipper Fairbairn batted out for an unbeaten 36 as Devon ran out of time on  188 for eight.

Kings Heath: Warwickshire 2nd X254-5 (T Burton 90, S Oakborn 50), Devon 188-8 (A Fairbairn 36no, W Gater 36, L Bess 40). Warwickshire bt Devon by 67 runs.
