SOUTH Dartmoor College U15 girls were beaten finalists at Lord’s in the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket competition.

The girls finished third in the 2014 finals and were hoping for an improvement this year.

Oakmeeds Community College were beaten by 23 runs in the first game after South Dartmoor had made 116,

The girls had a long wait for their next game which wasn’t until after lunch.

To pass the time they were lucky to be able to go on a tour of the ground including the pavilion, England dressing room and the Long Room.

Flegg High School were beaten after lunch. Improving on their previous performance, South Dartmoor scored 127 and restricted Flegg to 90.

The third game against Moreton Hall School proved to be the performance of the day.

South Dartmoor scored 142, an incredible score for a game in the local rounds let alone in a national final. Morton Hall made 74 in reply resulting in a convincing win for South Dartmoor.

The stage was set for the final game as opponents Ormskirk School had also won their first three games, meaning the winner would be crowed national champions.

Ormskirk batted first and continued to score quickly even though they regularly lost wickets. They were bowled out for the first time this year finishing on a score of 97.

Chasing the score was always going to be a struggle against Ormskirk who boast twins in the England Development Programme and so it proved.

South Dartmoor were bowled out for 65, losing wickets by having to risk running against a good fielding side as well trying to attack a good bowling unit.

It was South Dartmoor’s first defeat after 16 consecutive wins, although national runners-up out of 726 teams who entered the competition is an incredible achievement.

“Throughout the day the girls impressed officials, teachers and supporters not only through their performances - they had the highest three batting scores of the day - but also how they played the game and how they behaved as individuals and as a team,” said coach Scott Chappell.

“Teachers Julie Ingham-Hill , Becky Mason any myself couldn’t have been prouder of the girls.

“Over the past three years they have developed their individual cricketing skills as well as a strong team ethic through hard work and dedication, and have deserved all the success they have achieved.”

The team was: Ellie Ingham-Hill (captain), Libby McNally, Jasmine Dawe, Beth Powlesland, Libby Ford, Ellie Snow, Robyn Elliot-Ogden, Caitlin Wright, Olivia Dobson and Jess Cooper.
