STEVE Luffman is on his way back to Plymouth one last time at the ripe old age of 50.
Luffman, a former Plymouth 1st XI skipper, has been with Yelverton Bohemians for the past two seasons.
Yelverton were promoted from the D Division in Luffman’s first year at Langton Park – he was their leading run getter with 481 at an average of nearly 50 - and relegated back to it at the end of his second.
It will be Luffman’s third stint with the city side, where son Jake is a 1st XI regular.
The hard-hitting batsman first joined Plymouth from Tavistock in 1992 and played through until the end of the 1999 season before rejoining the Moorlanders.
A ten-season stay between 2000-2009 included a term as captain before Luffman rejoined Plymouth in 2010.
Luffman left Mount Wise at the end of the 2011 campaign, saying then he didn’t want to deny a youngster a 1st XI place – and he wasn’t ready for 2nd XI cricket just yet.
He is going back to Plymouth willing to play wherever he is asked.
“Some people thought I was going back to skipper the 2nd XI, but that isn’t the case,” said Luffman.
“I was assured by the people at the top they want me to be available for 1st XI selection if needed so captaining the 2nd XI was out from the start.
“I have had two great years at Yelverton – especially the first one when we won promotion – but the attraction of Premier cricket in either the 1st or 2nd XI with Plymouth proved just too tempting.
Meanwhile, Plymouth are on the lookout for a new wicketkeeper after losing Callum Whittaker due to a change of job.
Whittaker, whose batting earned him a Devon call-up last season, has been appointed to a teaching post in Truro and is set to join the city side this summer.
“I will be unable to travel to training etc because of my new job,” said Whittaker.
