EXMOUTH have been dealt a blow on the eve of the new season with the news Chris Metters won’t be playing this year.
Metters, the South Devon CC youth system graduate, was on Warwickshire’s books for three years until injury forced him to leave the Edgbaston last summer.
Warwickshire were attracted to Metters by his performances for Devon in the Minor Counties Championship during the 2009 season when he topped the national bowling averages.
After a promising 2011 season, when he helped Warwickshire to second place in the County Championship table with 30 wickets, Metters did not play in another First Class game.
Metters (left) featured sporadically in 2012 and 2013 but despite surgery on his troublesome shoulder he was unable to play regularly.
Richard Baggs, the Exmouth captain, said Metters had decided to take a year off as he would be unable to bowl if he did play.
“Chris could play as a batter only, but he would not get into the top six when we are at full strength and he didn’t fancy batting below that and fielding for 50 overs,” said Baggs.
“My advice to him was take the year off, get the operation he needs and comeback in 2015 fighting fit.
“He is 23 now and has plenty of time on his side to play cricket. A year off may just get him enthused about playing cricket again.
“Ten overs a week in the Devon League is not the same as 50-60 a week in Warwickshire’s 2nd XI.
“If he gets his shoulder repaired and carries out the rehabilitation, there is no reason why he can’t be bowling for Devon again next year.”
