Stoke aqueeze past Torquay by one run

STOKE Gabriel defeated Torquay by one run in a thrilling game of cricket in the Aaron Printers Narracott Cup.

Chasing 160 to win in the 20-over competition, Torquay got down to the last ball needing four to win or three to tie and could only squeeze two from Tim Western.

Stoke batted first and were reduced to 15 for three after four overs with some clever bowling by Terry King (3-15) and dreadful batting.

It then became the Antony Scott show as the Aussie big hitter crashed 92 not out, including seven towering sixes.

Ben Robinson (21) and Scott put on 77 for the fourth wicket.

Great bowling by Torquay youngster Ben Francis included the wicket of his former teacher Andy Lockyer, caught and bowled for 0.

Torquay's reply was based around a faultless 93 not out by Tim Western, which included three sixes and seven fours. Western and Josh Hunt (28) put on 83 for the first wicket.

Ipplepen had a far smoother passage into the last eight as they trounced Shaldon Optimists by 112 runs at Moor Lane.

Pens were asked to bat first on a deceptive wicket that played slowly – and promptly racked up 150 for nine.

Runs flowed through the innings with major contributions from Matt Quartley (29), Jonny Ranjit (21) Al Boon (17) and a cameo from Steve Bowden(17).

Bowden smashed two sixes in the last over to bring up the 150.

Having given away 30 wides as well, the late onslaught seemed to drain the confidence from the visitors, who started their innings slowly against the guile of Keith Wakeham (1-10) and the aggression of Sam Barrett (1-4).

Great catches from Ranjit, Sam Wakeham, Dave Harris and Jon Sewell, saw wickets tumble as the change bowlers Sewell (4-10) and Bowden (4-14) ripped through a strong batting line up.

Only Karl Blackburn (12) offered any real resistance as the visitors were bowled out for just 38 in 11.4 overs.

Ipplepen 150-9 (Extras 36, M Quartley 29, J Ranjit 21, A Boon 17, S Bowden 17, S McKenna 3-26), Shaldon 38 (K Blackburn 12, J Sewell 4-10,S Bowden 4-14). Ipplepen bt Shaldon by 112 runs.

Stoke Gabriel 159-6 (A Scott 92, B Robinson 21; T King 3-15), Torquay 158-5 (T Western 93, J Hunt 28, M Penrice 18; A Scott 2-23).
