FOR the eighth time in fourteen weekends the weather played havoc with the Stay In Devon North Devon Cricket League.
Not a ball was bowled in any of the three top Division games with the matches at Bideford, Filleigh and Sandford all being cancelled.
The postponement count in the top flight has now reached 19 whilst just 25 of the 44 games that should have been played have been completed! There remain a dozen to play and, with five teams still in with a chance of landing the top honour, there’s sure to be some exciting action between now and the last game – weather permitting!
The biggest disappointment in terms of the title race, was the cancellation of the match between two of the sides chasing the top honour, Filleigh and Hatherleigh. Filleigh have had six cancelled so far and have three to play whilst Hatherleigh have lost seven of their twelve games to date to the weather and have just two left to play.
In Division Two with just the one game seeing action it means that 21 of the Division’s 42 games have been lost to the weather – half the programme! The one game that saw limited action was at Witheridge where Incorrigibles had got to 60-3 when the rains washed out any further play in the meeting with table topping Halberton.
Halberton have just three more matches to negotiate to seal a coveted place in the top Division next season. They play Heathcoat home and away, meeting them first at Sampford Peverell next Sunday (August 12) and also host Shebbear. Two more wins will see the Mid Devon men go up, the only way it could all go wrong is if they were to lose both to Heathcoat which would leave the way clear for Beaford to take the one promotion ticket available.Spare a thought for the players of Victoria Park 2nd XI who were rained off for the ninth time in thirteen games when their match at Hatherleigh II was called off!
There was a match played to a finish on week fourteen and that was a Saturday affair. The Division Five meeting between Filleigh III and Nomansland had to produce a first win for somebody as both sides went into the game looking for that elusive first victory.
At stumps it was home side Filleigh celebrating after a three wicket win in a low scoring affair. It’s also a game that Karl Shaw will remember for a long time for he claimed his first ever hat-trick. Shaw finished with 4-12 as the Witheridge based side were bowled out for 89 with only Jim McDonald making a score with a knock of 21. Filleigh made hard work of the run chase losing seven wickets along the way,. However, Jonathan Ralph (32) and Millie Squire (18no) saw their side to victory. Henry Hayden took 5-30 for Nomansland.
