North Devon beat Newton Tracey in title decider
TABLES

NORTH Devon are the 2012 Stay In Devon North Devon league champions after they won the title deciding game at rivals Newton Tracey by seven wickets.

Luke Peterson and Luke Ansell both claimed three wicket hauls as Newton Tracey were bowled out for 141 with only Phil Steward (45) and Rob Gear (20) making much impression with the bat.

Peterson then stroked an imperious 86 and 40 not out from skipper of the day Dan Bowser saw the Instow men over the finishing line.

Newton Tracey or Filleigh will bag the runners-up berth depending on their final outings.

Braunton climbed away from the drop zone with a six wicket win at Bideford where teenager Alfie Huxtable (3-33 and Alec Hodges (2-35) combined to bowl the home side out for 178.

Matt Allin (43), Ian Hayter (43) and James Ford (21) were the principle run scorers for Bideford.

Ford then claimed 2-21, but an unbeaten 67 from Tom Mitcham and a knock of 45 from Ian Roberts saw Braunton to victory.

A similar result in their final outing will see them play in the top flight again next season.

There are three teams still in the scrap to avoid the one drop spot with Braunton, Bideford and new basement dwellers Barnstaple and Pilton separated by less than a single point’s average!

In Division Three Holsworthy lost their final game, beaten by five wickets at home with Sandford II the victors.

The defeat does not affect the side’s promotion place as they are guaranteed second place and will therefore start next season in Division Two alongside Shobrooke Park.

In Division Four Ilfracombe’s promotion hopes were ended in defeat at Instow with North Devon III beating them by 55 runs.

Richard Clark struck 124 whilst Bob Heaman (23) and Tom Stanton (22) also chipped in as North Devon closed on 231-4.

Simon Pomeroy (3-21) and Sam Meadowcroft (3-34) then combined to bowl the visitors out for 176.Rob Holmes hit 34 for Ilfracombe.

Heathcoat II lost their final game, beaten by a very strong Filleigh II outfit.

The victory for the visitors means they will pip the Mid Devon men to the Divisional title if they win their final game at home to North Devon III.

Anything but a win and Heathcoat will land the title, both side will play next summer in Division Three.

In Division Five Dulverton ended their first season in the league with another triumph, but they now face a nervous wait to see if they will be promoted.

Lee Hooper hit 90 to guide the side to a seven wicket home win over Newton Tracey II.

Julian Moore top scored with 49 in his teams 164-5, passed for the loss of just three wickets thanks to Hooper.

The nervous wait is because, currently, Barnstaple and Pilton II are in a relegation slot in the division above and so would not be relegated as the club currently has an eleven in the basement division! Dulverton and Bishop Nympton share top spot in Division Five, but the former take top spot having won more games.

That’s harsh on Dulverton who suffered no fewer than eight weather enforced cancellations, three more than Bishops Nympton!
