Filleigh promoted on last day

STAY IN NORTH DEVON LEAGUE – FINAL TABLE

The Stay in Devon North Devon cricket league drew to a close and Filleigh II were the team doing the celebrating on the final day as they bagged an eight wicket home win over North Devon II I which gave them the Division Three title by a margin of less than one points average!

Heathcoat II had started the day leading the table, but Filleigh knew any sort of win would leave them with a point’s average of 13.57, thus overhauling the Knightshayes men’s 13.55!

Mike Prideaux claimed four wickets for three runs from five overs as the Instow side were bundled out for 56.Godfrey Tucker then hit an unbeaten 32 to take Filleigh to victory and the title.

In the top flight just the one game was played as Braunton were unable to raise a side for their final game, thus conceding the points to Hatherleigh.

Newton Tracey cemented their third place finish with a 20-run home win over Barnstaple and Pilton.

Simon Gear top scored with 36 in his sides 178-9.

Danny Donovan claimed 2-20 for Barum who were then bowled out for 158 with only Andrew Barton making much progress with 42.

Rob Hutton took 3-18 for the winners.

Division Two champions Halberton lost for the first time in the season in their final outing, beaten by five wickets at Heathcoat.

Jeremy Turner did his best to try and see Halberton through the season with a perfect record.

He struck 49 of his teams 138 and then claimed 3-22 as Heathcoat sailed home with 139-5.

James Reed top scored for the Knightshayes side with 31, earlier Oliver Mitchell had taken 2-22 in the Halberton innings.

Kelseymen claimed a six wicket win at Petrockstowe where Dave Cresswell hit 41 top see his side to victory at 140-4 after Pete Lewry (3-13) and Alfie Huxtable (3-28) combined to bowl the hosts out for 136.

Tom Scantlebury hit 28 for the home side.

Ian Cockwill and Lewis Harris both bagged a brace of wickets as Cresswell led the visitor’s home.

In Division Three there was a close encounter played out at Belstone where Sandford II ended their season with a five run win! Luke Wright hit 59 of the Sandford offering of 139.

Matt Dennis claimed 3-17 for Belstone who were then bowled out for 134 with Wright bagging 3-15.

Richard Drake top scored for the hosts with 28.

Instow’s excellent batting wicket was at its best for two games for North Devon II over the weekend.

On Saturday Dan Bowser (103 ret’d), Dan Pickard (61), Tom Ansell (60) and Casey Elliott (31) led the Instow men to 322-8 against Newton Tracey II.

Graham Moore top scored with 32 in the reply that ended on 136-9.

The following day Pickard (80), Bowser (59), Elliott (33) and Tom Stanton (31) combined to see North Devon to 286-9 against Shobrooke Park.

The Mid Devon sides are champions of Division Three for good reason and they and an excellent fist of the run chase, closing on 246-6.

John James hit an imperious unbeaten 126 whilst Pete Turner and Chris Ford chipped in with 40 and 37 respectively.

In Division Five Filleigh’s16-year-old batsman McCauley Harrison-Hooton top scored with 65 and Kevin Toze struck 29 as Feniton III closed on 175-8 against Barnstaple and Pilton III.

Ali Fewins took 3-44 for Barum who were then bowled out for 130 with Emily Ward taking 4-20 as only Rob Holm, with 28, made much impression with the bat.
