WEEK SIX – LATEST TABLES
WEEK six of the North Devon cricket league season saw a player run out on 99, another left high and dry on 98 when his teams final wicket fell and there were a cluster of centuries struck and fivefer’s picked up across the action in all five divisions.
In Division One Dan Bowser hit an unbeaten 128 to set up a 78-run win over Newton Tracey at Instow.
Sam Witheridge chipped in with an unbeaten 66 whist only Rob Hutton with 2-33 had any joy for the visitors with the ball. Richard Screech then hit 41 and there were contributions of 38 from Rob Gear, and 34 from Julian Moore in the reply that saw the final visiting wicket fall on 177.
Bowser rounded off a fine afternoon’s work with a brace and Casey Elliot came on to finish things off taking two wickets without conceding a run in five balls in what proved to be the final over of the day. Victory keeps North Devon joint top of the table with both Hatherleigh and Filleigh.
Filleigh were six wicket winners at Barnstaple & Pilton where George McEndoo was unfortunate enough to be run out in the final over of his side’s innings for 99! Top Popham weighed in with 44 and the Barum innings closed on 205-5. Mike Prideaux bagged a brace for Filleigh who were then led over the winning line by Jaz Kalsi with an unbeaten 94. However, had catches been held by the hosts – Kalsi was put down three times – the end result might have been very different!
Braunton picked up a second top flight win of the season with a 23-run home victory over a Bideford side who have now lost all three matches they have started this term! Andy Paddison served up the match winning all-round contribution for the hosts. Paddison top scored with 51, and there was a knock of 47 from Tom Mitcham in a total of 213-7. Jack Hocking was the most successful visiting bowler with 4-43. John Weeks (40) and Josh King (31) then kept the run chase ticking along, but wickets fell at regular intervals, the final one falling at 190. Paddison finished with 4-28 and Alec Hodges took 3-29.
BEAFORD, Halberton and Heathcoat are the pace setters in Division Two. Beaford ensured Weare Giffard made a losing start to their season inflicting a five wicket defeat. Marc Bettis top scored with 46 for Weare Giffard in a total of 138-9. Much of that low score was down to an inspired spell from Paul Old, son of former England test star Chris, who claimed 5-16 from nine overs. Paul Heard gave good support with his 2-18. Ali McMillan then led the run chase with 49 and Daniel Lane chipped in with 28. Max Curtis with 2-22 was the most successful of the visiting bowlers as hosts Beaford claimed victory on 139-5. Halberton were too strong for eight man Lynton and Lynmouth who were hustled out for a paltry 62 with Ali Taylor (3-11) and Harry Everett (2-3), the principle wicket takers. The Mid Devon men made hard work of the run chase losing five wickets on the way, but a knock of 26 from John Chilcott ensured that Halberton ended winners and they go head to head with Beaford this coming weekend.
Heathcoat are the third of the second tier side’s to still sport perfect records after they thumped Incorrigibles by 161 runs at Knightshayes. Chris Small slammed a century (100) and knocks of 50 from Guy Clatworthy and 44 from Guy Bucknall, led the hosts to an imposing 307-6 against Incorrigibles, for whom Russell Hilton claimed 4-54. The reply saw only Ryan Bowden make much impression with 54 as Jamie Drew claimed 4-6 in half a dozen overs and Martyn Williams picked up 2-47.
Shebbear’s Ollie Wickett scored 102 and Andy Bryan struck 59 to lead their side to 211-9 at home to Victoria Park. Ricky Kelly and Steve Oliver each claimed three wicket hauls for Park who replied with 196-7 led there by Giles Bashford (54) and Kelly (53).
IN Division Three there was an emphatic eight wicket home win for Bratton Fleming at the expense of Belstone. Ollie Hunt (4-12), Patrick Crane (3-11) and Neil Ayre (2-8) combined to bundle the visiting side out for 74, passed in some comfort by the hosts, thanks to an unbeaten 44 from Hunt.
There was a high scoring affair at Newton Tracey II where North Devon II won by seven wickets in a game that saw 474 runs scored and just seven wickets lost! Jon Turner scored an impressive unbeaten 108, putting on 110 for the first wicket with Andy Chatham (30) in a total of 235-4. However, that Turner knock proved to be in a losing cause as Matt Knapman (74) and an unbeaten 70 from Bob Heaman guided the Instow side over the winning line at 239-3.
THERE was a thrilling Mid Devon derby at Creedy Park where Sandford II’s last pair edged their side over the finishing line to bag a single wicket win over Shobrooke Park . The visitors batted first and closed on 226-6 thanks to an unbeaten 100 from Emanuel Parmakellis. Pete Turner (31) and Chris Ford (30) also chipped in, whilst Ash Baker and Simon Ashplant both bagged a brace of wickets. Ben Clement then set off at a rapid rate of knots smashing four 6s and 11 fours on his way to 83. Then wickets tumbled and, at 148-8 it looked grim for the Creedy Park side. Luke Wright, batting at seven, had other ideas and his 54 was supplemented by an unbeaten 48 from number ten bat Mike Canning who was joined by 16-year-old Kieran Vinnicombe (3no) and the pair added 22 for the unbroken final wicket to net Sandford a thrilling victory. Pete Steer had 3-24 for the visitors.
In Division Four Anna Squire claimed a brace of wickets for Filleigh II as they went down by 39 runs at home to Heathcoat II. James Cridland was another ‘nearly’ man as he was left high and dry unbeaten on 98 when then final Heathcoat wicket fell at 201. Mike Blackmore hit 47 and then claimed 5-19 as Filleigh were restricted to 162-9 with only Godfrey Tucker offering serious resistance. Jamie Matthews (53), Nathan Townsend (34) and Ryan Woodger (31) combined to see Ilfracombe to 239 all out at home to Kelseymen for whom Gary Gomez took 3-49. That proved more than enough as the visitors were then bundled out for 63 in 25 overs thanks to a splendid spell of bowling from Jason Newman that saw him claim 5-11 whilst Jamie Sutton picked up 2-15. Phil Ley claimed 5-28 as Petrockstowe were bowled out for just 97 at North Molton with only Brendan Harris troubling the scorers for too long with 25. Dom Ford (36no) and Jack Reed (25no) then saw the hosts to an eight wicket win.
James Tythcott (73no) and Lee Farrant (57no) led Westleigh to a ten wicket home win over Barnstaple & Pilton III who had earlier been bowled out for 134 with Mike Merrick taking three wickets and Luke Purkiss bagging a brace.
IN Division Five there was no play possible for a frustrated Bratton Fleming 2^nd XI, denied action by a pitch that was considered unfit for play at Victoria Park. They did play at Dulverton where Hatherleigh won by two wickets, successfully chasing down the home side’s 203-7 with a score of 205-8. Lee Hooper and Jason Abbot both hit half centuries for Dulverton whilst Robert Dubery claimed three wickets in the visitors successful run chase.
