By ROGER NEWMAN - Director of Cricket Devon CCC
DEVON CCC have had one of its most successful years for some time during 2011.
The County have continued the policy of introducing younger players and identifying and developing the next generation of Devon cricketers via the Devon Lions, supported by the David Shepherd Foundation, to whom we are extremely grateful.
We take our role as an integral part of the ECB elite player pathway very seriously and the fact that a number of players including Lewis Gregory, Chris Metters (pictured, right) and the Overton twins have moved through into the professional game and into the England development programme in the last 12 months illustrates our success in meeting our obligations in terms of development.
In addition team performances have resulted in us winning the Western Division, moving forward to the play off against Cambridgeshire this Sunday .
Individual performances have included an outstanding 170 by Robbie Woodman against Dorset, an excellent 100 by David Lye against Wiltshire and James Burke has batted consistently at the top of the order throughout the season.
Chris Bradley has once again starred with the ball taking 34 championship wickets and on his debut as captain against Shropshire at Exmouth he took 12 wickets in the match and was deservedly awarded his county cap.
However all the squad should take great credit in an achievement that true Devon cricket people will be rightly proud.of.
As with any successful group or organisation we need to be continually raising the bar in respect of ambitions ,always be prepared to make tough decisions in the long term interests of the club, and ensure that the Devon Cricket League and Minor Counties cricket continues to be a breeding ground for future county and international stars and a highly competitive environment for young talented players to showcase their talent.
