Lords' appointment for Torquay scorer

TORQUAY CC’s long-serving scorer Nicholas Evanson has been asked to do a top job at the home of cricket.

Evanson, who is 41 and lives in Chelston, celebrates 25 years as Torquay’s 1st XI scorer this season.

Two days after the season gets under way for Torquay with a home game against Premier Division champions Sidmouth, Evanson is off to Lord’s for the Yorkshire Bank 40 League match between Middlesex and Glamorgan.

Evanson (pictured)  has been appointed Duckworth Lewis manager for the match – and if the brollies come out he will be brought into action.

Evanson will be responsible for all calculations just in case the scourge of cricket, hits.

“I shouldn’t pray for rain but one short shower would be nice,” said Evanson.

The appointment is all part of Evanson’s training to become a level three scorer.

The Duckworth Lewis method of calculating the result in a rain affected match was first introduced in 1999 to replace the traditional runs per over calculation which is currently used in the Devon Cricket League.

The system has subsequently been split into a standard manual version and a professional computerised version.

Having attended a workshop run by the Association of Cricket Officials, Evanson will be using the professional version at Lord’s.

As scorers representative for the Devon Association of Cricket Officials, Evanson said: “The opportunity I have been given demonstrates the value of joining the Association of Cricket Officials – opportunities and training are out there.

“I would therefore encourage all scorers to join the association.”

Fellow officials have been quick to congratulate Evanson on his appointment.

Ken Jeffrey, an umpire and Torquay official, said: “This is a great honour reflecting your dedication and love of your hobby and the energy you apply in assisting others to become scorers.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to participate in cricket at a very high level without standing at the Lord’s ticket office earnestly hoping to get a seat.

“When the day comes, apart from undertaking your responsibilities, please enjoy the occasion.

“I am sure other people will be as delighted and proud of you as I am.”

Chris Shelton, a doyen of the umpiring circuit in Torbay and Devon, said: “Well Done Nick - more power to the south area training unit.”

Evanson, a civil servant, has clocked up more than 450 consecutive Premier and A Division games in the scorebox for Torquay.

Game number one was way back in 1989 against Exmouth when he replaced long-serving Esme Kingdon in the box.

He should reach his 500th league game for Torquay during the 2014 campaign.
