NORTH Devon left Budleigh Salterton still searching for their first win of the season after chasing down 203 to win with more than three overs and seven wickets to spare.
Budleigh made 202 for eight in a game restricted to 48 overs each - Dickie Arnold top scoring with 43.
Jason Smith hit 59 at the top of the order – he and Barney Huxtable (37) put on 90 – and after Smith, Huxtable and Max Curtis fell reaching 125 the chase was taken on by Dan Bowser and Rob Gear.
Bowser made 36 not out and Gear was unbeaten on 38.
Having taken a pasting at Plymouth seven days earlier, North Devon needed a result to kick start their season.
“A fantastic result for us - just what we needed to get started,” said skipper Matt Dart
“Apart from my measly three overs (0-33) it was a superb, all-round effort.
“Max Curtis (1-19) and Rob Gear (2-40) bowled superbly around the wicket, making Budleigh hit into the wind, something that is vital at Instow to restrict runs.
“Paul Heard and Jason Smith (2-23) bowled tightly in the power plays and Budleigh were always 50-60 runs short of par.
“The batting went well with Jason stepping up to open as Jas Kalsi has a hand injury.
“Barney looked a class act and with Geary going in at five it's a handy order.”
Arnold hogged the limelight with a rapid 43 – he put the ball into the thatch on the pavilion roof four times – but he wasn’t Budleigh’s only run getter.
James Burke (29) and Bob Dawson (30) both chipped in and there was support from Matt Kidd (18) and Lloyd Murrin (18), but it was new boy Arnold who was praised by skipper Joel Murphy.
“Richard Arnold looks a very good cricketer indeed and I am pleased for him that he scored runs in one of his first games for us,” said Murphy.
“We were 30-40 runs short on a pitch that played fine and had a good go at defending it.
“James Burke, Kiddy and Matt Plowman all bowled well and their figures don’t do them justice.
“Had we played as well as this against Cornwood the week before, we would have won. I am sure of it.
“It was disappointing to lose, but not the end of the world.”
