Only way is up for North Devon

NORTH Devon skipper Matt Dart is aiming for a substantial improvement on last season’ mid-table finish when the Premier season starts this Saturday with a trip to Plymouth.

The Instow outfit were champions in 2011, but lost players during the following close season and were never really in the running last year. Sidmouth won the title instead.

The boot is on the other foot for 2013 with four new signings to pep up the squad.

And Dart’s aim is push the frontrunners a lot closer this year.

“Looking at the players they have brought in, Exmouth have to be the team to beat and Sidmouth will be there or thereabouts,” said Dart.

“We have recruited well with three new players and a new overseas and I would expect us to be up there with the best of them.”

Batter Jaz Kalsi (Braunton) and spin-bowling all-rounder Max Curtis (Exmouth) are both back with North Devon this season after time away.

Barney Huxtable, who started out with Braunton before having a couple of seasons with Exmouth, has joined North Devon for the first time and will open the batting with Curtis.

Expect Dan Bowser to go in at three with Kalsi at four and Rob Gear at five.

Jason Smith – a rising star in the South African U19 side – starts the season with the club but may be going home in before the end of the campaign for domestic duties. He will take the new ball while he is around with youngster Paul Heard.

North Devon start the season without their Zimbabwean star Glenn Querl, who is on an extended trial with Hampshire. Mid-June is his earliest date to return – just in time to face Sidmouth!

Dart doesn’t know whether he will see much of Querl this season, or either of the Overton twins.

“To be honest I hope for all their sakes we see as little of them as possible,” said Dart.

“Glenn is pursuing his ambition to become a First Class cricketer and we would like to see him succeed.

“If the twins are available for us then they are not playing for Somerset – and again we want to see them in the first team there.”
