DEVON captain Neil Hancock will thank his doctors for their advice and take no notice of what they have said to play in the Minor Counties Championship final against Cambridgeshire.
Hancock goes into hospital today to have surgery on his badly broken nose after taking a direct hit from Devon colleague Trevor Anning while batting for club side Sidmouth against Exmouth three weeks ago.
The operation has already been put off once so that Hancock could lead Devon into the game against Berkshire last weekend, which they won inside two days to win the Western Division to reach the final.
Cambridgeshire beat Staffordshire by 24 runs to win the Eastern Division title. They will have home advantage at March CC in the four-day game staring on September 4.
Hancock is determined to play, despite advice to the contrary from his doctor.
“I cannot leave it any later to have the operation if I am going to get my good looks back,” joked Hancock.
“Seriously, if I leave it any longer there is a chance it won’t be too successful so I have to have it done now.
“I have been told to avoid any form of contact sport for a month, which in my book doesn’t include cricket. If you play it right it isn’t a contact sport.
“The doctors don’t want me getting hit again while the operation is healing, so I shall take some sensible precautions, such as wearing a helmet when I bat and not spending too long in the slips.
“As Josh Bess went into slip for the game against Berkshire and took five catches, it’s probably best if he stays there.”
Devon only face Cambridgeshire in play-offs or the one-day knockout cup competition as they are in different divisions – and it is a while since they met at all.
The last time was way back in 1994 when rain ruined the two-day play-off game at Worcester’s New Road Ground. Devon were awarded the title on first innings bonus points earned.
