OTTERY St Mary are to run a third team in the Francis Clark Devon League in 2014, writes Stephen Birley.
It’s an indication of the continued development of the club who have a colts system the envy of many Devon League clubs!
Proof of their strength in the junior game the club is to field no fewer than ten teams in next summers East Devon Youth League, and that’s three more than the next largest number, seven by Exeter CC!
Rob Southall-Brown, the junior section chairman at Ottery St Mary explains the introduction of the third eleven saying: “Thanks to the number of young teams playing cricket through our youth system it means that year on year we are likely to produce at least 11 players each year from now into adult cricket and they’ll need somewhere to play!
“We also want to ensure we keep developing players to bolster our 1st and 2nd XI’s in future years.
“With the 2nd XI achieving promotion to Division A it is becoming harder to give some of the junior players the experience they require and we see the third eleven as the ideal platform for those younger players.”
The Ottery St Mary 3rd XI will play home games at the King's School playing fields which is within sight of the Otters pavilion, which means visiting teams can be treated to post match hospitality in the Strawberry Lane clubhouse.
