Murrin and Eames win Seniors' awards

NEIL Murrin (below) and Bob Eames were named players of the year at the Devon Seniors CC annual meeting.

All-rounder Murrin (Budleigh Salterton) was player of the season for the Over-50s side with Eames (Sandford) taking the same accolade for the Over-60s.

Eames – a veritable run machine for the Over-60s last season – went on to play in a ‘Test’ against the touring Australians at Leeds and crowned his season by making a century. Eames is one of two players off to Australia this winter on an Over-60s’ Ashes tour.

Nigel Ashplant from Sandford was the Club XI player of the year.

The awards were handed out at the club’s annual meeting and dinner, held at the Dartmoor Lodge Hotel in Bovey Tracey.

Chairman Chris Theedom reported on an extremely successful season for the club.

Both age-group teams qualified for the knockout stages of their respective competitions.

Three players were selected to play for England at Over 60s – Eames, Peter Rose and Stuart Lott, who is going to Australia this winter - which was a great achievement.

Rose’s England debut against the Aussies at Sudbury was spoiled by bad weather. Not a ball was bowled.

Theedom added that when players had started their careers none would have thought about representing England at 60-plus.

He felt Devon Seniors were on the map thanks to the achievements of the players.

The chairman praised the organised and enthusiastic committee and thanked them for the hard work that they had put in over the past 12 months.

The chairman said that for the 2012 season, it was likely that there will be 2nd XI competitions for 50s & 60s teams.

Officers elected: Chairman – Chris Theedom; treasurer – Stuart Munday; fixture secretary Mike Hunt’; secretary – Stuart Lott; players’ representative – Francis Pyle; Over-50s’ captain – Nigel Mountford; Over-60s’ captain – Tom Stanton; Club XI captain – Dave Amery.
