PAIGNTON batsmen Mark Smith and Simon Edwards tore up the record books in the Premier Two game against Bovey Tracey.Edwards and Smith came together with the score on 34 for one after opener Ian Selway had just been dismissed for nine.
Selway could only sit in a Queens Park deck chair for the next three hours as Edwards and Smith both made centuries – and kept going.
By the time Paignton skipper Tim Ward declared when Edwards was dismissed for 126 the score had reached 346 for two.
Smith was undefeated on 158 when they overs ran out.
For Bovey were bowled out for 119 in reply with Mike Pedley taking four for 29.
The second-wicket stand of 312 was a new record for the division. Max Curtner-Smith and Ian Matthews (North Devon v Exmouth, 1995) shared the old one of 227 with Hari Kumar and Sean Langford (Exeter v Exmouth, 2010).
Had Ward not come in early another four runs would have broken the team record of 349 for three set by Plympton against Seaton in 2006.
Both Paignton batsmen come from cricketing dynasties well known across South Devon.
Edwards late father Hiley was Devon captain from 1985-1991, one uncle Chris also played for the county and uncle Paul turned out for Cockington Corinthians.
Smith’s father Steve was an all-rounder with Torquay, Paignton and South Devon.Grandad Alan opened the bowling for Torquay in the 70s and went on to become an umpire.
