ENGLAND cricketer Caroline Atkins will be at Ipplepen CC next Monday night (April 30) to launch a new fun training evening aimed at women and girl cricketers of any ability.
All ladies and girls aged from eight can go along and try a training session, which will be based around softball ‘kwik cricket’ style games.
Complete beginners are welcome as the emphasis will very much be on fun and participation.
The new training night will run on Monday evenings throughout the summer, and has been funded by Teignbridge Council’s ‘Active Villages’ programme. There is no charge for taking part.
Ipplepen’s Head Coach Chris Partridge commented: “As a progressive club who aim to offer cricket for all sections of the local community, the move into girls and women’s cricket is a natural progression for Ipplepen.
“Although we have developed some talented girls through our general junior coaching programme, the time seems right to launch a training night just for girls and ladies.
“We hope that this will lead on to having an U13 girls’ team and a ladies’ team to play some softball friendly matches this summer. The main priority is to get more people involved in the club and enjoying a great summer sport.
“The Monday night sessions will be very relaxed and informal, offering a great way to keep fit and make new friends as well as learning some new cricket skills.
“Cricket is one of the few team sports that runs during the summer, so may be of interested to ladies who play other team sports such during the winter.”
Atkins, who has recently been on a month-long tour to South Africa captaining the England Academy side, will be visiting three primary schools during the day before heading to Ipplepen CC for the evening session.
Atkins has won the Ashes and the Women’s World Cup as part of the England team, and now works as an ambassador for Women’s Cricket in Devon alongside her playing commitments.
Anyone wishing to attend the Monday night session should get to Ipplepen’s ground on Moor Road at 6pm.
