Plymouth bring in Queenslander Simmers

AUSSIE all-rounder Mike Simmers is heading for Plymouth this season as their overseas player.

Simmers who is 22, is playing First Grade cricket in Queensland for Sandgate-Redcliffe.

He has played for Queensland at U17 and U19 level and his form in the season just ended earned him a slot in the Queensland 2nd XI.

With an average of more than 50 in Grade cricket, it’s easy to see why the State selectors were taking an interest.

Simmers bowls leg-breaks when asked and I also an ACB level one coach.

Simmers is the only significant newcomer since the end of last season, although there has been some good news concerning existing players.

Pace pair Hal Kerton and Dave Burke are fully fit and challenging for 1st XI slots;

Dan Goodey and James Toms have topped up their winter training with sessions with the Devon Lions development squad.

Big-hitter Jake Luffman could be doubtful though due to a rugby injury.

Skipper Matt Hooper led Plymouth to second place in the table last season – their best finish for a generation. He has moved to Hampshire during the winter.

The challenge facing new skipper Sam Stein, another player to benefit from Lions training time, is how to improve on second.

“We have a good young side that gained valuable experience in the Premier Division last season,” said Stein.

“It might be a bit too soon for us to talk about winning the Premier, but we are getting better all the time.”
