PLYMSTOCK captain James Nichols believes the 62-run win over Braunton proves his side can’t be written off as promotion contenders.
Back-to-back wins over Tavistock and now Braunton have lifted Plymstock into mid-table
There remains 34 points to make up on second-placed Bideford, but Nichols doesn’t see that as a problem.
“We are going in the right direction and at the right time of the season,” said Nichols.
Scott Mansfield (81) and Dean Fulco (52) slammed 135 for the fourth wicket as Plymstock recovered from 26 for three to make 224 for eight.
Dave Orchard kept the scorers busy with 40 off 24 balls. Orchard and Morgan Parkinson added 40 for the seventh wicket – Parkinson making four!
Alfie Huxtable took three for 63 with Matt Smith sending down a tidy spell for two for 25.
Braunton were all out for 162 in reply – Orchard (3-21) and Parkinson (3-44) doing damage of a different kind. Nichols (2-16) got on at the end.
Braunton’s best efforts with the bat came from Tom Robotham (44) and Mark Mitchell (33), who put on 75 for the sixth wicket after the visitors had slumped to 65 for five.
“Braunton couldn’t cope with our spinners, not just the wicket-takers but George Barnicott, whose one for18 in nine really slowed them up,” said Nichols.
“Had we taken our catches they would have been lucky to get 120.”
Braunton’s acting captain Jon Baglow said his side need to remember league games last 45 overs if they want to start winning some.
“Another good start with bat and ball, but we can't sustain it for longer periods,” said Baglow, who has been standing in while Ian Roberts gets over an operation.
“Games don't last for 25/30 overs an innings. We need to be able to keep the same standards for the whole game.”
