JUST grand! Plymouth’s lady cricketers have been given a cash helping hand towards growing their section at the club.

The Devon Community Foundation has stumped up a £1,000 grant to pay for equipment, insurance and coaching to help women and girls improve their skills.

The club hopes to attract more women and girls to play cricket and to join regular practice sessions every Tuesday night.

The award has been welcomed by team captain Claire Varcoe, who plays for the Devon Ladies team and Plymouth’s men’s  sides on Saturdays.

"There is a huge interest in women's cricket right now and with this funding we hope to create a generation of women and girls who play cricket for life,” said Claire.

Plymouth Women's team play at the recently redeveloped Mount Wise facilities in Devonport and Claire is keen to encourage anyone to come down and try cricket even if they've not played before.

"We train every Tuesday night from 6pm. It's a really friendly atmosphere so I would say to anyone who wants to try it out please come down and have a go."

Devon Community Foundation is a charity supporting hundreds of voluntary and community groups helping local people build communities for everyone.

The foundation has distributed more than £9million to around 2,700 projects across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay in the last nine years.

Laura Hewitt, marketing manager for DCF, said: ‘We are delighted to be able to support Plymouth Cricket Club.

“It’s what makes DCF so important to ensure that together with donors and local groups we can build strong and vibrant communities for everyone in Devon, both now and for the future.”
