Mansfield takes over as Plymstock captain

SCOTT Mansfield wants a more focused approach all round from Plymstock after taking over a 1st XI captain from James Nichols.
Nichols has stood down after two seasons in the job but remains part of the fixtures and fittings at Plymstock.
Mansfield, who was with Cornwood until joining Plymstock in 2013, has been busy recruiting during the close season to strengthen the squad.
Nichols had hoped to lead Plymstock straight back into the A Division last summer following relegation in 2013, but they were well off the pace in sixth when the final table was drawn up.
Mansfield said the B Division looks strong this year, but that shouldn’t be an obstacle to promotion as Plymstock are stronger too and should have learned lessons from last summer’s mistakes.
Top of the list is a little less talk and a bit more action.
“Last year we lacked respect for the opposition on occasions and that cost in a number of games,” said Mansfield. “This year I hope that won't be the case.
“My sole concern is how we perform with bat and ball, not how we talk about it.”
When Plymstock were last promoted from the B Division in 2011, batter Dom Wood led the way with 877 runs at an average of 54.81 and was named the Devon League player of the season.
Wood promptly moved to London and within two years Plymstock were back in the B Division.
Wood is back with Plymstock this season, as is the much-travelled Jack Horton, a top-order batter and bowler who was with Bradninch last term.
“Both players on their day have the ability to take games away from opposing teams in very quick time,” said Mansfield.
“Mixed with their experience, that makes them two very handy additions.”
Dave Petherbridge, a bowler with an uncomplicated approach to batting, has arrived from Cornwood.
South Devon tried to sign Petherbridge after he announced he was ending a 30-year association with Cornwood, but he opted for another club closer to home.
Dave's cricket brain and experience will be great to have around the club, but he assures me he isn't joining to just make up the numbers,” said Mansfield.
“Dave has his hunger back and cannot wait to get stuck in to a fresh challenge.”
Plymstock’s overseas assistance in 2015 will come from 23-year-old Australian quick bowler Nick Lowe.
Lowe is currently playing for Lilydale CC in the Ringwood and District competition, first grade.
“Nick has taken a number of wickets this season and hopes to bring his success with him in what will be his first experience of UK conditions,” said Mansfield.
Lowe’s best figures in the current seaspn are four for 12 against Chimside Park.
Mansfield said when you add who will be arriving to what is already on board, Plymstock ought to be up among the frontrunners.
With the likes of James Nicholls, Jason Williams, Seb Jordan, Ian Whalley, Dave Orchard and Teddy Richards, when he returns from his travels, we have players who have the ability to alter games on their day,” said Mansfield.
“I hope to see ther names in the top end of the averages come the end of the season. If that happens and we won't be too far away.”
Plymstock have a new 2nd XI captain this season as Liam Savage has taken over from Whalley, who played most of last season in the 1st XI.
Nets start on Friday, February 20 at Plymstock School between 8-10pm. New players welcome.
