PLYMPTON have strengthened their squad ahead of this summer’s return to the Devon Premier Division with a couple of overseas signings.
South African all-rounder Wes Hartslief won’t be returning to Harewood House for a third season as he has joined a club in Wiltshire.
His place in the side will go to Thomas Johnson, an opening bowler and top-order bat currently playing in South Australia.
Johnson was talent spotted by Plympton keeper Dan Robotham, who has spent the UK winter player Grade cricket in Australia.
A second signing is South African Fraser Smith, another cricketer who bats and bowls. Smith is a UK passport holder and isn’t classified as an overseas player.
Arwyn Jones, the former Devon left-arm spinner who used to play for Sidmouth, has returned to the area and re-registered.
Jones, now 43, won’t commit to playing every week but skipper James Carr hopes to include him on an occasional basis.
Missing from last season’s side is former 1st XI captain Andy Walter, who has asked to play 2nd XI cricket in future.
BOVEY Tracey all-rounder Sam Wyatt-Haines has transferred to West of England Premier side Clevedon for the season ahead.
Wyatt-Haines now lives almost permanently at Taunton during the season as he is on a summer contract with Somerset.
Clevedon have close links with the County Ground – Andy Caddick plays there, so does Jake Lintott – and have helped other young Somerset players in the past.
On the way in to Bovey Tracey is Toby Codd, a batter who can bowl who has been through the older youth teams at Abbotskerswell, who were relegated into the B Division last season.
Codd is a cousin of Wyatt-Haines.
BRADNINCH have added two more players to their squad as they build towards a promotion push out of the A Division.
Lawrence Greenway (pictured) has left Exmouth for Kensham Park, to the regret of former captain Richard Baggs.
“He is a batting all-rounder who bowls off-spin, a lovely lad and I am sorry to see him go,” said Baggs.
Opening bowler Zufar Abdal Zufar, who can bat a bit as well, has signed from the University of Exeter.
New skipper Dan Hardy has been hard at it on the signing front during the close season.
Other signings include Chris Metters (ex-Warwickshire), Charlie Walker (ex-MCC Young Cricketers) Lawrence May and Luandre van Wyk from sandford and Devon age-group prospect Josh Cann from Feniton.
