SIDMOUTH will be looking to kick-on further at the top of the Premier Division table when they visit lowly Heathcoat this Saturday.
Will Murray’s men opened up a whopping 26-point lead at the top of the table last time out with a hefty nine-wicket win over defending champions Exmouth.
Skipper Murray said it wasn’t a result he expected, not that he was complaining!
“Nine wickets and 22 points to none – that was a shock,” said Murray.
“We have known all season which ones are our big games – Exmouth, Plymouth, North Devon – and there was a lot of pent-up excitement going into this one.
“Josh Bess and Scott Barlow have been bowling well all season and Dan Babula came up with some big wickets in Richard Baggs and Bob Dawson, showing what a good bowler he is becoming.
“Exmouth’s strength is they play attacking cricket – and it did for us twice last year.
“Perhaps not changing tactics was their weakness against us. They had three caught at cover still playing shots even when wickets were falling.”
Beaten captain Baggs couldn’t really argue with Murray’s summing-up.
“We were blown away and gave out wickets away far, far too easily,” said Baggs.
“We are a long way behind now in the title race, and have a mountain to climb, but we can do it.”
Bess (4-18), Barlow (2-18) and Babula (4-21) had Exmouth rocking at 26 for four then 41 for seven on their way to 62 all out. Losing Sandy Allen to the first ball down from Bess set the tone.
Former Exmouth all-rounder Liam Lewis was out second ball to Gary Chappell, but he was Sidmouth’s only casualty.
Bess and Anthony Griffiths with a brace of 29 not outs saw Sidmouth home in 15 overs.
