Overton tops Premier batting stats after quick fire 142

BATTING AVERAGES | BOWLING AVERAGES

JAMIE Overton’s whirlwind 142 not out took him to the top of the Premier Division batting averages in the season that ended last Saturday.

Somerset fast bowler Overton (right) played nine games for club side North Devon, and came off more often than not.

Overton made five 50s and one century – his brutal 142 against Sidmouth in the final game of the season.

Overton hit 13 sixes and 12 fours going from 0-50 in 20 balls, 50-100 in another 20 and 100 to 142 in 15.

His total of 502 runs in eight innings with one not out gave him an average of 71.71.

The Overton family have a bit of form for this type of behavior as twin Craig took 154 in 114 deliveries off Torquay in the final game last season.

Second in the batting averages was Heathcoat’s Qassim Adams, who finished on 653 for the season at 59.36.

Adams made a small piece of Premier history by making four centuries over the season as no one had done it before since the division was slimmed from 22 to 18 games a season in 1999.

Four other batsmen averaged more than 50: Exeter duo Neal Prowse and Andy Curtis, Joe Hagan Burt of Plymouth and Sidmouth’s Josh Bess.

Bess with 684 runs just pipped Adams as the leading, aggregate run getter.

Adams headed the list of ton-up batters with four. Sidmouth’s Liam Lewis and Plymouth’s Gionne Koopman had three each.

Highest single score of the season was Bob Dawson’s 153 not out for Exmouth against Sandford.

Torquay Max Waller headed the Premier Division bowling averages with 19 wickets at seven runs each.

Waller played in eight games for the Seasiders when his Somerset commitments allowed and his economy rate of 2.48 runs per over was the most miserly in the top flight.

When the occasional bowlers and partnership-breakers are filtered out, it was Jamie Overton who came second in the bowling list with 14 for 168 (12.00).

The leading wicket-takers were Sidmouth’s Dan Babula (left) with 45 at 12.46 each – including a season’s best in the Premier of eight for 62 against Exmouth.

Best of the rest was Exmouth’s Gary Chappell with 36 at 14.02.

Bovey Tracey’s Malcolm Lake spun his way to 33 wickets (16.48) to add to a respectable 574 runs at 35.87 would be a candidate for all-rounder of the season.

Tom Allin, the former Warwickshire all-rounder, took 30 wickets (16.73) on his return to the Devon League.

No one bowled more overs – nearly 163 of them – than Cornwood’s Byron Langley, whose 29 wickets at 20.79 could not save this side from relegation.
