Premier headlines - June 16

PLYMOUTH stole a march on the rest of the Premier Division yesterday when they defeated Heathcoat by nine wickets in the only top-flight game played to a conclusion.

Lowly Heathcoat got the worst possible start when opener Sam Smith fended the first ball of the match from Sam Stein into the waiting hands of Matt Hooper in the gulley.

By the time Jack Maunder was run out for nine - Jake Luffman’s throw too quick for him - Heathcoat had subsided to 30 for five.

A stand of 28 for the eighth wicket between Ned Menheneott (22no) and Tom Drake (7) kept Plymouth at bay for a while.

Bringing Rob Bennett back into the attack had the desired effect as he took three in a row to finish with four for 20 as Heathcoat were all out for 73.

Ben Stein and James Toms (36) gave Plymouth a 50-run start to the chase and that was game over.

Jack Bryant (14no) was in at the end with Stein (12no) when the runs were knocked off in the 18th over.

Victory shoots Plymouth up to fifth in the table.

The only other game to start in the Premier Division was a Bradninch, where the home side were bundled out for 63 by a combination of Will Murray (3-8), Matt Cooke (2-6) and Josh Bess (2-12).

Sidmouth were 43 for two in reply when the terminal downpour came, just 19 runs short of a win which would have put them fifth in the table.
