Lenygon asks Exeter batter to apply more thought

EXETER skipper Miles Lenygon believes a bit more thought is needed by the batsman when Paignton visit the County Ground on Saturday.

The City side were bundled out for 101 at Torquay last time out and lost by six wickets.

New-ball newcomers Will Hardwick and Tom Barton (3-20) made Torquay work for their victory, but Lenygon recognised there were not enough runs to defend.

“Torquay bowled well and our shot selections were a bit iffy,” said  Lenygon.

“Perhaps we could have been slightly smarter as it was clear after 15 overs that 130-140 could have been a very good score.

“Yet we kept trying to up the tempo and lost wickets.

“Our opening bowlers were very good and gave us a chance. But Max Waller (46no) chanced his arm and he and Tim Piper (21no) finished it off well.”

Paignton head for Exeter looking to build on their five-wicket win over Plymouth.

A win in their second game back in the top flight was just the settler Paignton needed – especially after Bovey shot them out for 85 the week before.

It went down to the last ball though before Paignton chalked off the 202 needed to win.

Paignton seamer George Yates had got into the Plymouth middle order as four wickets fell for 16 runs. He came back at the end to finish with figures of six for 27.

George Benton, currently standing in as captain for the injured Connor Bryan, said he never had any qualms about winning the game, despite the tense finish.

“It was a hard-fought game, but we didn't go out not to finish with 20 points,” said Benton.

“It was a fantastic performance from the lads. Being such a young, inexperienced side we proved a big point that we aren't just a team who will rock up and expect nothing.

“The lads performed exactly how I asked and got the job done.

“Even when it got to the last ball I had no doubts about the result.

“We know there is still a lot of room for improvement but to get that first Premier win is a massive boost.

“We will go to a lot of games this year and get many more wins.”
