Pugh appointed Brixham captain

BRIXHAM have signalled their intention to go flat out for promotion into the Premier Division this summer by appointing former Devon and England Board XI batsman Andy Pugh as captain.

Pugh, 44 in May, has been semi-retired from league cricket since 2009 while bringing up a young family. In a Devon League career spanning a quarter of a century until the, he had played for Barton in two stints, Brixham in two spells and had a season with Exmouth.

He played 175 times for Devon in all competitions between 1988-2005, and won a gold award for the county in a C&G Trophy game against Worcestershire in 1999.

Brixham lured Pugh (pictured, left) back last season to coach at the club, which developed into helping out the 2nd XI on a handful of occasions.

Centuries against Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Ottery St Mary showed Pugh had lost none of his run-scoring ability and got him thinking about playing again.

Brixham were looking for a 1st XI skipper, and after talks with club captain Wes Fowler, Pugh agreed to take on the job.

“The club wants promotion and I hope to play my part in achieving that,” said Pugh.

“There are some good youngsters coming through – it was really enjoyable coaching them last year and seeing them develop in the 2nd XI – and I am looking forward to continuing that process in the 1st XI with some of them this season.

“We also need some older heads too, and that is something I am working on.”

Brixham are also working on finding an overseas player as their initial target appears to have been ‘poached’.

“We had a South African quick bowler signed, but it appears he has been offered some sort of scholarship at home as he is attracting the attention of the U19 selectors and they want to keep an eye on him,” said Pugh.

Pugh said wife Sara was partly responsible for encouraging him to play again.

“She said you are a long time retired and if you can play you should while you can,” said Pugh.
