Brixham better placed for promotion push says Pugh

BRIXHAM captain Andy Pugh feels there’s more depth to the squad at Boundary Park this season thanks to some close season acquisitions.

Gone for one reason or another are batter Richard Ward, asseamer Joe Hyde and keeper Chris Sleep, who is talking about becoming an umpire.

Left-hander George Northcott is getting married during the season and probably won’t feature much from halfway onwards.

In come keeper-batter Joel Ashworth from Paignton, early order batsman Josh Hunt from Torquay and a couple of overseas players.

Stuie Edgar, a seamer from Queensland, qualifies as an exempt player under age regulations. He is only 17.

South African Matt McGinley is a First Class cricketer at home. He averages 11 with the ball and 40 with the bat and looks like being a handful.

With new players on board and better availability among the squad, Pugh has been able to redraw some job descriptions.

Former Devon seamer Mark Orchard is going to get a new role batting more and bowling less now Brixham have more bowlers.

“Mark was our turn-to bowler last season – and had to operate under pressure to take wickets,” said Pugh.

“Rather than expecting him to take a wicket every ball, we can use him more as a strike bowler than stock bowler.

“With Lee Upham around and Craig Eaves back from around week four as well as the new lads, we have plenty of bowling options

“Mark is also a very capable batsman and I would like to see him devote more time to that.”

Brixham finished fifth last season, never living up to the pre-season talk of a promotion push.

Pugh isn’t sticking his neck out but clearly has expectations.

“We have more strength in depth from within for one thing and a stronger overseas player,” said Pugh.

“Last season we lost six or seven games because the opposition has a better overseas player than us.

“I doubt that will be the case this season..

“As for promotion let’s see where we are at half way.”
