SOMERSET had a look at North Devon’s Glenn Querl in their Second Eleven Trophy defeat by Sussex at Hove and the drawn championship game against the same opposition at the same venue.Querl, a 24-year-old bowling all-rounder from Zimbabwe, has been playing First Class cricket through our winter for Matabeleland Tuskers.
He is a regular in the Unicorns Pro40 side, is an ex-MCC young cricketer and has trialled for Hampshire and Essex in the past.
In the one-day Trophy fixture, Querl took one for 41 from seven overs and made five batting a last man in.
After being put into bat, Sussex scored 249 for four from 33 overs, with Max Waller claiming two for 28 off his seven.
In reply, Somerset reached 85 for three – thanks to opener Tom Abell who made 17; Waller with 19, and Devon’s James Burke who hit 44 – before they crumbled to 139 all out.
The Championship match was ruined by bad weather, however Querl bowled tidily to take one for 70 from 24 overs.
After the opening day was washed out by rain, the young Somerset team were put into bat first and were bowled out for 141 in 54.5 overs, Jake Lintott top scoring with 33 and opener Abell scoring 23.
In reply Sussex were dismissed for 231, Waller the pick of the bowlers with four for 56 off 17.4 overs, while Harry Rouse took two for 54.
Batting for a second time 90 runs in arrears, Somerset reached 155 for six off 56 overs before time ran out.
