SANDFORD are stuck fast at the foot of the Premier Division table with leaders Sidmouth to play this Saturday after going down by 37 runs to defending champions Exmouth.
Exmouth declared five overs early on 252 for four – Bob Dawson making an unbeaten 153 – in the hope of landing two extra bonus points for bowling out Sandford.
It was Dawson’s 11th Devon League century – his first was back in 1988 against Chudleigh – and his best league score.
Former Bradninch captain Gary Chappell led the Exmouth bowling effort with three for 23 and with two wickets each for ex-Sandford pair Trevor Anning and David Lye, plus two more for ex-Thorverton pacer Matt Webb, the home side were all out for 215.
It was by no means a formality for Exmouth as Sandford fought back from 96 for five to reach 197 for six in reply thanks to a stand of 101 between Laurence May (54) and Adrian Small (61) against the club he used to captain.
Both perished having a go at the bowling – and after Small was eighth out Sandford didn’t score another run.
It’s still three defeats on the bounce for Sandford, but against top opposition skipper Jamie Palmer was content with the way his side played.
“We showed battling qualities that are going to be essential if we are to stay in the Premier Division next season,” said Palmer.
“We bowled well up front and Bob Dawson was only on 30 after 25 overs.
“Dawson batted superbly though, only giving one chance that I can remember.
“We felt once Exmouth declared on 250 we had a chance - and while Adrian Small and Laurence may were batting we were right in it.
“Laurence’s innings was superb and I'm hoping he can make good runs for us this season.
“Exmouth look a very strong side which is testament to how we played. They do look a bowler short if they are going to retain the premier division though.”
