PAIGNTON, Bovey Tracey, Torquay and Abbotskerswell were among the big winners at the Wollen Michelmore South Devon Youth Cricket League awards evening.

The event was held at the Grand Hotel, Torquay with around 100 young players and their families in attendance.

After an opening welcome from league chairman Chris Partridge (right), and a few words from Chris Wills representing the sponsors, the audience were treated to a fascinating discussion between former Somerset CCC star Arul Suppiah and his benefit year secretary Eric Cole.

Suppiah (left), who retired earlier this year due to injury, talked about his career, dispensed training advice for young players and reflected on his world record T20 bowling figures of six wickets for five runs.

Then the main business of the evening saw around 200 trophies handed out by Arul and Chris Wills.

Bovey Tracey won two divisions – U10 and U13 – as well as individual awards at U13 girls, U10 boys, U12 boys, U13 boys and U14 boys.

Abbotskerswell won two titles – U12 and U15 – as well as two individual awards, including U13 player of the year for Elliot Adams (left)

Torquay only won one division – the Girls U13 competition – but won five individual awards.

Paignton had a good night too with two divisional crowns at U11 and U14 level, plus five individual awards.

Torquay coach John Mather was also honoured with President’s Trophy for upholding the spirit of cricket.

The Herald Express Trophy for services to youth cricket went to Dave Woods of Bovey Tracey and was collected on his behalf by club chairman Nigel Mountford.
