Second XI round-up: All the news from Premier to E East
PREMIER DIVISION

BOVEY Tracey went nine points clear at the top of the Premier table thanks to a six-wicket win over relegation worriers Exmouth.

Sam Wyatt-Haines took six for 19 as Exmouth were skittled out for 82. Mark Gribble had the amazing figures of 12-10-3-2. Only Julian Page (22) reached double figures.

Wyatt-Haines then stroked 25 not out as Bovey raced to 19 out of 20 points.

Former leaders Exeter could only draw with mid-table North Devon and are now in danger of being overhauled by Sidmouth for second place.

Sean Langford made 46 and Richard Nelsey 42 in Exeter’s 40-over total of 202 for six. Jay Corden bagged three for 46.

North Devon replied with 140 for eight – McAuley Harrison-Hooton (37) and Corden (37) the main contributors.

Pick of the Exeter bowlers with four for 15 was slow left-armer Steve Milne

Sidmouth moved within a point of Exeter after trouncing Cornwoood by 84 runs.

Jamie Wardrop (72) and Dan Powell (40) put on 101 for the fifth wicket in Sidmouth;s 196 for six.

Andy Bees – refreshed from a week at Butlins – took three for 32.

The Corrns got to 80 for three with Matt Skeemer (26) and Scott Mansfield (27) weighing in.

Taking the pace off the ball proved decisive as Dom Bess (2-29) and Charlie Dibble (4-5) shot Cornwood out for 112.

Former 1st XI captains Terry Farkins and Mike Pedley came to Paignton’s aid after they had been bowled out for 103 against Plympton by Danny Hawker with an eight-for-29 haul.

Farkins took six for 42 and Pedley four for 29 as Plympton were bundled out for 87 in reply.

Plymouth’s game against relegated Tavistock was rained off.

 

A DIVISION

SANDFORD 2nd XI can look forward to Premier cricket again next season after clinching promotion with a three-wicket win over Braunton.

Gary Abdoll took three for 23 as Braunton were bowled out for 112. Brian Leach then hit 51 with Taylor Latham’s three for 24 the only hindrance on the chase.

Chudleigh are as good as up in second place after an embarrassingly easy 10-wicket win over Plymouth 3rd XI.

Graeme Wilson (6-6) and Matty Ball (4-13) shot Chudleigh out for a meagre 25. It only took 4.5 overs fo Chudleigh to wipe out the deficit and get home.

Victory puts Chudleigh 35 points clear of third-placed Heathcoat and as good as guaranteed promotion.

Hatherleigh fell apart against Bradninch and crashed to a five-wicket defeat.

Only veteran Terry Reynolds (24no) got past 20 as Hatherleigh went from 56 for five to 106 for seven and 107 all out.

Simon Bailey took three for 19 and there were two wickets each for Luca Fencl and Phil Chappell.

Billy Leathes (23) and Billy Wakeley (32) were the main run getters in the 20 overs used to wipe out the deficit.

Elsewhere, Budleigh Salterton (196-7) were frustrated by Barton (130-8), whose tail enders denied them a win without reaching the target for draw points.

Stoke Gabriel’s game against Heathcoat was a casualty of the weather which ended the Villagers’ slender chances of staying up.

B DIVISION

YOUNGSTERS Toby Codd and Hugo Whitlock were the stars of the show for Abbotserkswell in a remarkable 140-run win over Alphington.

Skipper Guy Harrison-Roberts (46) got early runs and Sean Green made 32 after the captain went at 93 for four in an Abbots’ total of 164 for six.

Lee Rowe and Nick Gott had two wickets each.

Whitlock single-handedly reduced the hosts to 6-4 with some superb swing bowling.

After he bowled the six overs he is limited to Codd came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over.

Codd then ripped through the rest of the batting as Alphington were bowled out for 24 inside an hour. Fifteen year old Whitlock finished with four wickets for four runs and 14 year old Codd 5 wickets for no runs at all.

All the wickets were bowled and only one player reached double figures among seven ducks.

“It was a credit to the hard work both had put in when playing in the 1st team recently and they reaped the rewards in this game,” said Harrison-Roberts.

“The result was vital in our battle to stay in the division and shows that with this kind of side available what the team could have done throughout the season.”

Ipplpen beat South Devon by five wickets to stay on course for one of the two promotion slots in the division.

Mike Smith (33) and Brian Allen (21) were South Devon’s main contributors in a tally of 128 for seven.

Tom Cooper (35) and Simon Tapley (40no) fended off Pat Duke (3-37) and Dave Amery (2-20) to settle the issue.

Brixham settled for a draw against Plymstock having run out of steam on the cahse.

Joe Hyde and Mike Meech had three wickets each as Plymostock were limited to 161 fo nine – Duncan Brace (46) top scoring.

Andy Pugh – out lbw for 38 – top scored for Brixham and there were chip-ins from Hyde (33) and Paul Heath (26) before Marc Woodward (4-26) helped slow them to 146 for eight.

Bideford came off badly second best against Sidmouth and remain bottom of the table with two game to pick up 21 points to reach safety.

Greg Chaplin (71no) and Simon Sobczak (64) put on 115 for the third wicket in Sidmouth’s 213 for three.

Graham Munday dereailed the Bideford chase by reducing Bideford to 28 for three on his own.

John Weeks (28), Marten Stanbury (28) and Fred King (28) effected a fightback, but from 90 for five Ian Thomas (3-14) and Sonczak (3-15) took charge as Bideford were dismissed for 153.

Ottery St Mary beat Kingsbridge by 23 runs – Keith Biggs (4-24) the star turn – to put the club within 10 points of safety.

C DIVISION

CLYST Hydon were on the end of ton they weren’t expecting when Yelverton rocked up to play them.

Ax Yelverton’s 1st XI were without a game skipper Richard Goldsby-West was at a loose end and able to assist the 2nd XI.

Goldsby-West slammed 113 in Yelverton’s total of 215 for seven AND took three for 39 to help skittle Clyst for 143 and condemn them to a 73-run defeat.

Good job Hydon aren’t battling to stay up….

The only other game played in the C Division was Plymouth CS&R’s 27-run over Thorverton in the second-against third clash.

Jack Dent (55) and Mark Hopkins (38) were the main run getters as Civil made 180 all out.

Dent (5-22) and John Mitchell (3-56) got Thors all out for 153 in reply, although while James Janion (92) stayed in there was always a doubt.

Relegated Shobrooke Park were unable to raise a side against Honiton.

Cornwood and Barnstaple were rained off.

 

D East 2nd XI

EIGHT points from their home game with Kentisbeare II on the penultimate Saturday of the season will see Exeter II move up to the C Division of the 2nd XI championship next season.

They bagged an 11th victory in 13 outings with a seven-wicket success at Upottery II with Naj Choudhary once again the all-round star. He claimed 4-6 and Jit Singh took 3-42 as the villagers were bowled out for 125 with only Adam Pullman (37) lasting long at the wicket.

Choudhary then hit an unbeaten 41 to help the champions-elect to a seven wicket win at 126-3.

Feniton are set to miss-out, but they will sit clearly as the ‘best of the rest’ in second place. They were denied action in their penultimate game when North Devon III failed to raise an eleven for the visit to Acland Park .

Kentisbeare II were 100 run winners at Countess Wear II where the stand-out performance was a hat-trick from Martin Howe. Howe, took 5-37 to help bowl the Exeter side out for 117.

Andy May top scored with 35 for Countess Wear but their 117 was 100 fewer than the Kent ’s had struck earlier, led to their 217 by Roy Thomas (74) and Martin Howe (62). Matt Woodman claimed 5-42 for the home side.

Henry Perry (37) and Andy Bellworth (34) were the principle run providers in the Uplyme and Lyme Regis II total of 149.

Max Felgate (4-34) and Raul East (3-27) were the Axminster wicket takers and then Sean Perry (32), Dan Bicknell (30), James Farley (24) and John Swain (23no) led Axminster over the finishing line at 150-5.

Tom Sampford made a rare appearance for Exmouth III and what a difference his presence made as he hit a dozen boundary 108 leading his team to a 21-run win at Whimple II, the first win of the season for The Maer men’s third eleven!

Sampford’s century apart there was also a useful 37 from Callum Wade and David Grant chipped in with 23.

Whimple were then bowled out for 195 with Grant Northover (51), Steve Palfrey (46) and Daniel Williams (35) the main scorers. Harry Conway (3-36), Ethan Hodge (3-39) and Lucy Burch (3-41) were then Exmouth wicket takers.

E DIVISION EAST

Thirteen points from their final game at home to Axminster III on Saturday and Ian Hunt’s side will be crowned E Division East champions.

Hunt’s men were denied action by a soggy Thorverton III wicket, but nearest rivals Kilmington II had to settle for a winning draw at home to Cullompton II. Skipper Ash Cook (64), Graham Watts (46) and Martin Huscroft (41) led the villagers to 250-7. Malcolm Coombes took 2-42 for the Landspeed Meadow side who then replied with a stubborn 145-6 led their by Mark Mortiboys (43). Charlie Potter took 4-38 from 12 excellent overs for Kilmington.

Chris Salter hit 34 to lead Halberton and Sampford Peverell to an eight-wicket win at Exeter Civil Service II.

Earlier Adrian Salter had claimed 5-15 and Max Ansell 2-14 as the Exeter side were bundled out for 65 with only Robin Richardson (10) in double figures.

Axminster II could not raise an XI for the visit to Topsham St James II and so conceded the match.
