DEVON’S Over-60s’ 2nd XI are through to the national semi-final of the Spitfire National Championship after a remarkable 36-run win over Hampshire in the regional play-off game at Bovey Tracey.

Devon looked down and on the way out of the competition after slumping to a 37 for five on a grey day at Bovey.

The situation was turned around by Richard Coe and Nigel Mountford, whose stand of 142 for the sixth wicket left Sussex in despair.

Coe batted through for an unbeaten 82 while Mountford was out in the last over for a hard-grafted 56 in a total of 179 for seven.

Hants looked good at 78 for three, were starting to struggle at 92 for six and after a brief revival to 133 for seven lost the last three wickets for 11 runs.

Paul Berman (4-29) took early wickets and there were wickets late on for Mike Dowell (3-28).

Waiting for Devon in the last four is a trip to Worcestershire on Friday. No venue has been confirmed yet.

The other semi-final is between Kent and Sussex. The two winners meet in the final with the losers contesting third place in a play-off game.

There was disappointment for the 1st XI though as they were 37-run losers to Sussex at Sandford in their regional play-off game.

Sussexmade 205 for seven – Stuart Lott and Brent Howard taking three wickets each for Devon.

Despite a typically gutsy half-century from Tom Stanton, Devon were all out for 168 in reply.
