Sidmouth honour club achievers
Coming soon... Sidmouth awards night slide show

ONE of Sidmouth CC’s most popular figures has died shortly after being honoured by the club.

Former Devon League umpire John Wadsworth, who was 73, had been battling cancer for a couple of years.

Sidmouth named Wadsworth as their non-playing member of the season when they looked back at the achievements of 2011.

Although he had scaled down his cricket activities in recent seasons, Wadsworth continued to umpire ladies’ and U15 games for Sidmouth and was a busy figure off the field around the club.

Wadsworth is pictured (right) collecting his award from former Sidmouth chairman Tom Overthrow. His funeral is at Sidmouth Parish Church next Friday (December 9) and 2.45pm, followed by a reception in the club.

Devon star Josh Bess, a member of the side who won the Minor Counties Championship last season, was named 1st XI batsman of the year, players’ player and won the cup for the best league score of the season, 91 not out against North Devon on the Fortfield.

There was a special award for ex-chairman Overthrow, who has recently retired from the job after seven years in place.

The new chairman is Mike Dibble, whose old job as secretary has been filled by current 1st XI opening batsman Anthony Griffiths.

Other awards winners were: 1st XI bowler – Will Murray; 2nd XI batsman – Matt Hewer; 2nd XI bowler – Mark Jasper; 3rd XI batsman – Declan Lines; 3rd XI bowler – Dominic Bess; best fielder – Jamie Wardrop; contribution to club’s success – Colin Whitehall; playing clubman – Saj Patidar; most promising colt – Dan Powell; most improved player – Nick Mansfield; services to cricket - Tom Overthrow
