Clyst saddened by death of long-serving official

CLYST St George have lost one of their stalwart members with the death of Roger Simmonds. He was 64.

Simmonds was introduced to Clyst by Brian Wills in the 1960s, and as a wicket keeper-batsmen went on to play for the best part of four decades.

Once his playing days were over, he continued to support the club as a popular scorer and match reporter for local newspapers, notably the Exmouth Journal.

“In more recent years Roger spent many hours compiling the club’s yearly fixtures, a position he only relinquished last season,” said chairman Mike Johnson.

“He was well loved for his witty comments and match analysis.

“Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go to the family in their sad loss.”

Away from the cricket pitch, Roger (pictured) was an enthusiastic member of the Budleigh Salterton Players amateur dramatics group.

As well as performing he also wrote reviews on other groups’ productions for a number of weekly papers.

Simmonds was a Methodist preacher and regular visitor to congregations around East Devon.
