DEVON’S Over-60s are gunning for glory on fronts next week after reaching the regional play-off stage in the Spitfire National Championship.The 1st XI will face Sussex at Sandford on Tuesday (1.00pm) in their play-off game, bidding for a place in the national semi-finals;
In their last group match Devon easily defeated Somerset at Butleigh to finish top of their group, winning seven out of eight games.
Somerset made 138 for four -Mike Denford taking two for 24 – then Bob Eames hit 64 not out to see Devon to an eight-wicket win.
Devon hope to go one step further than last year when they finished third.
On Thursday at Bovey Tracey the 2nd XI take on Hampshjre also looking to reach the last four.
Devon 2nd XI are clearly in good nick for the game after sweeping aside Somerset by 127 runs in their last outing.
Rob Newing (100) and Rodney Bowden (104) both scored centuries in Devon’s 268 for four. It was the first time in any Devon Seniors match that two tons had been made in the same innings.
Somerset were bowled out for 141 in reply.
DEVON’S Chris Theedom had a debut to remember for England Over-60s in the one-day international against Australia at Stroud.
The Sandford veteran hit 40 in England’s total of 196, which was enough to beat Australia by 51 runs.
