Randall-Johnson adds tribute to Roebuck

FORMER Minor Counties player and umpire Guy Randall-Johnson has added his tribute to Peter Roebuck, who died last month.

Randall-Johnson played for Devon (86-90) then joined the MCCA panel of umpires (93-08).

He writes: “In the few years I have been around Minors cricket I have seen most forms of captain, None truer than Roby.

“He respected the game for what it is.

“The greatest compliment I can give him, from a cricketing perspective, most captains are two/three balls behind the game, few are on a par with it.

“Roby was two balls ahead. I loved umpiring those competitive games. The keener the better.

“He used to chat with the umpires especially David Halfyard about the wicket and weather etc .

“One game at Sidmouth against Berkshire they had a rising star called Aftab Habib.

“He scored a hundred in the second innings and asked me what was wrong?

“I told him ‘you are bowling too well’.

“At Truro the previous two days Habib played well against the better bowlers but lost his concentration against what he must have thought were lesser bowlers.

“Roby put on Adrian Small, who took 6-37.”
