DEVON'S Minor Counties Trophy game against Cornwall at Instow was called off without a ball being bowled.

Unusually, Devon cancelled the game on Saturday night having taken into account the forecast for the following day.

“Given the extremely wet weather forecast overnight, the chances of play were virtually nil so we reluctantly called off the match,” said Devon’s chief executive Neil Gamble.

Andy Cameron, North Devon’s exasperated groundsman, said the decision was made too early. North Devon played a match against Braunton on Saturday, which was played-out to a conclusion with no interference from the weather!

“The playing strip, bowlers run-ups and two pitches either side had been covered all week and were dry,” said Cameron.

The outfield was also totally playable at the time the game was called off.

Devon have now been rained off two weeks in succession in the competition as their match against Hertfordshire at Welwyn seven days earlier was also a casualty.

It’s Bedfordshire next for Cornwall and Devon over the looming Bank Holiday weekend.

Bedfordshire are playing Cornwall at Truro on Sunday and Devon at Bovey Tracey the following day.
