Devon suffer six-wicket defeat against Somerset II

MAX Waller and Tom Abell both got out in the 90s as Somerset 2nd XI cruised to a six-wicket win over Devon at Sidmouth.

Rob Holman hit an unbeaten ton as Devon made a respectable 245 for six in their 50 overs.

Max Waller, out for a run-a-ball 93, should have had a century and Tom Abell (94) will feel the same as Somerset knocked off the runs with 3.4 overs to spare.

Somerset were two for two after an early going over from Anning, but at 161 for three when Waller was caught on the mid-wicket boundary the writing was on the wall.

Abell was run out chancing his arm against Morris’ out in the country, but by then the target was 26 to win and James Regan (41no) got most of them.

Devon lost opener Rob Woodman in the first over, but

but recovered thanks to a stand of 137 between Holman and Thompson.

After opening bowlers Lewis Gregory and Adam Dibble were spelled, Thompson and Holman were able to get on with it.

Ashley Davis went for 33 in four overs - 17 in one over littered with full-tosses.

Holman overhauled Thompson to reach his 50 in 69 balls with seven fours.

Spin finally brought a wicket for Somerset when Thompson got the reverse sweep out to Waller and was bowled for 39. He faced 93 balls in a 127-minute stay and hit four boundaries.

New man in David Lye arrived with the score on 137 for two with 19 overs to go.He didn't last long as left-arm spinner Jake Lintott snared him lbw playing back in front of his stumps.

Jason Hall was next man in at 140 for three - and out at 142 for five when he was stumped running down the track to Lintott.

Zac Bess went first ball to a yorker, that was five wickets for five runs, which left Pete Randerson to see off the hat-trick ball. He survived a confident shout for lbw, which failed to impress umpire David Moseby.

Holman had moved on to 77 in a Devon total of 151 for five. Lintott had three for 14.

After 44 overs the total had reached 199 for five with Holman (96) closing in on a century and Randerson unbeaten on 25.

Holman's ton arrived in the next over from Dibble. He had faced 128 balls and hit 12 fours. Randerson was 26 not out in a new total of 205 for five.

Randerson and Holman put on 89 in 85 balls for the sixth wicket. The partnership ended on 231 when Randerson shaped to cut Gregory and was bowled.

In the time left Holman reached 118 not out in Devon's 50 over total of 245 for six.

Pick of the bowlers for Somerset with three for 36 was Jake Lintott. Gregory bowled well for none for 31 in 10 overs.
