STOKE Gabriel are about to start fund-raising for anambitious project to replace their ageing pavilion with a new one.And as part of the blueprint there are plans to bringother sports clubs into the fold at the Eastley Memorial Ground.
Archers already use the ground and there are proposals tolay out rinks for bowls, a croquet lawn and possibly a boules court fordevotees of the popular French pastime.Bill Alcock, the vice-chairman of the club, said replacingthe pavilion was a priority.“The existing one - a second-hand, converted holidaychalet - is very old and s in such a dilapidated state it is now beyondrepair,” said Alcock.“The club have recently gained planning consent toreplace the present structure and our aim is to build a new fit-for-purposepavilion to enhance the existing cricket facilities.“We also want to accommodate other sports and pastimes,in particular to assist the creation of a bowling club by allowing an allocatedpart of the playing field to be developed into a bowling green.“Petanque (boules) and even doubling up the use of thebowling green to accommodate a croquet lawn have been suggested and are underconsideration.”
“The cricket club are trying to maximise usage of a newpavilion for the benefit of the Stoke Gabriel community.”A dinner, to raise money for the project has beenorganised for Friday, November 15 at Churston Golf Club, 7.30pm.
A three-course carvery will be followed by a guestspeaker and ‘piggy racing’. Tickets cost £25 and can be obtained through TonyRowe on 01803 782222.
