STOKEINTEIGNHEAD will be back in the nets next month as they start gearing up for the season ahead.
Some players have been keeping fit over the winter by competing in the new South Devon Indoor Cricket League at Paignton Community College.
The second season of the competition saw them competing in Division One against the top local sides.
The backbone of Stokeinteignhead for many years has been the ability to develop players through junior ranks to the senior Sunday League side.
The Villagers must be doing something right as their system nurtured Chris Bradley, the current Devon captain, and brother Peter who player for the county last season and is skipper of Premier side Bovey Tracey.
The next generation is emerging thanks to the help of Jamie Gray and the rest of the coaching staff at the club.
Stoke have invested over the winter in putting willing volunteers through the coaching courses run by the Devon Cricket Board.
It’s not just coaching the club has invested in, as secretary Ian Lang explained.
“The committee is always looking to move the club forward and thanks to monies received from Sports England and prudent housekeeping with the club funds are in the process of purchasing vital equipment to help with player and ground development,” said Lang.
“A roller and covers will help keep the square in its usual good condition for the standard of cricket played and hopefully reduce the chances of match cancellations and its effect on club finances.
“The purchase of a bowling machine will bring benefits to both the adult section and helping to move forward the junior section at the club.”
A fixture List for the 2013 season has been out together with the usual mixture of friendly fixtures against local and touring cricket sides.
A priority this season, under the guidance of Mark Russell and Tom Hawkins will also be trying to regain their place back in Division One of the South Devon Cricket League, of which Stoke were founder members nearly 40 years ago.
Indoor practice starts at Trinity School, Teignmouth on Tuesday evenings from 7-8.30pm on March 5.
New and former players welcome. Contact Lang (langian@aol.com) for further details or look at the Stokeinteignhead Village website
