Toms slams 56 as Plymouth cruise into T20 final
JAMES Toms hit an unbeaten half-century as Plymouth cruised into the final of the Ivor Dewdney’s Devon T20 competition at Exmouth today after vanquishing Sidmouth by eight wickets in the first semi-final.

Sidmouth struggled to find the boundary when the batted – just eight fours were dispatched – and were all out for 111 with one ball left in their 20 overs.

Zac Bess top scored with 43 for Sidmouth, whose next best score was 15 from Anthony Griffiths.

Plymouth made a 25-run dent in the deficit through Callum Whittaker (11) and James Toms.

Whittaker departed to a regulation catch at mid-wicket off Will Murray, but Toms and new man Andy Birkett carried on to reach 53 before the next breakthrough.

Birkett went next for an unlucky 13 – lbw to Will Gater from the seventh ball of the over.

From 53 for two it was downhill all the way for Plymouth as Toms and Chris Barr knocked off the rest.

Toms hit three sixes and four fours on his way to 56 not out from 43 balls. Barr ws 24 not out.

Sidmouth never really fired from start to finish when they batted. Losing Josh Bess in the first over caught at slip didn’t help.

Sam Anderson was bowled by Henry Bennett, who came back to torment Sidmouth in his second spell.

Anthony Griffiths made 15 then got given out lbw playing the reverse sweep.

Luke Bess was caught behind for six and then Zac Bess followed him back to a sliding catch by George Stephenson, who ran down the Exmouth hill to take it.

Plymouth brought back Bennett for a second stint and in 11 balls he took four wickets for 11 runs to finish with five for 22. He took two wickets in two balls twice, the last two to end the innings.

Sidmouth 111 (Z Bess 43; H Bennett 5-22, R Bennett 2-21) Plymouth 114-2 (J Toms 56no, C Barr 24no).  Plymouth bt Sidmouth by 8 wkts.
