Tarka U11s claim the regional crown!
Tarka Girls Cricket Club from North Devon who train every Monday at NDCC Instow won the South West Round of the Lady Taverner's Softball Competition at Frenchhay Cricket Club in Bristol. The Lady Taverners provides fantastic opportunities and competitions in both soft and hardball cricket for all girls teams. These competitions inspire many young players to aspire to play higher level cricket. The girls played Pangbourne and Whitchurch CC in their first match. It was a great team performance and the final sore was 275 off 8 overs to Tarka and fantastic bowling from Olivia Kingdom, Olivia Churcher, Flora Corbin and Grace Heard resulted in a final score of 216 for Pangbourne. The girls went on to play Radyr the winners of the Welsh region in their second games. Nerves set in initially as watching Radyr in their previous game, we realised that they had depth in their batting and bowling and we would have to play well to win. Opening bowlers Heard, Churcher and Corbin pinned down Radyr opening bats and a few good catches in the field plus an excellent direct hit run out meant the Tarka Ladies held Radyr to 206, a terrific effort!
The final was played against a strong and confident Frenchay team. Losing the toss and being put into bat put pressure on the Tarka girls who scored a 'gettable' 242 runs. The last Frenchay pair went in to bat needing only 9 runs to win but Grace Heard and Olivia Churcher delivered their best bowling of the season right on cue and wicket maidens by both girls resulted in Tarka Girls being the well deserved winners of the Lady Taverners South West regional Finals 2014.
The squad; Olivia Kingdom, Shannon Thomas, Eleanor Voce, Lucy Quick, Maisie Hart, Chloe Parry, Olivia Churcher, Flora Corbin, and Grace Heard (Capt). Manager, Jan Witheridge offers many thanks to Matt Cooke for organising the Devon round of the competition, to Andy Lees and Jo Kirk from the ECB for a truly wonderful day, and thanks and congratulations to all those parents who have supported the girls and to Mark Overton (Coach) Well done!!

Tarka Girls U13s Regional Champs as well! The North Devon Tarka U13 Ladies followed hot on the heels of the club’s U11 side by winning the South West Regional Lady Taverner’s competition held at Frenchay Cricket Club this week. They played representative sides from Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset and Berkshire. The tremendous hard work and commitment the girls and their parents have put in over the winter and beyond was most evident and at last well rewarded.
There were some outstanding performances on the path to victory. Daisy Meadowcroft and Rose Ball batted and bowled exceptionally well. Daisy had to retire on the maximum runs in all three matches and Rose stunned the staunch Frenchay grand old guard sitting outside the pavilion with a superb six to reach her retirement figure in the second match of the day.
Issy George, behind the stumps took three catches. Grace Heard who was outstanding on Monday for the U11 winning side performed well again. Charlotte Lipscombe and Kate Williams also took good catches. Flora Corbin bowled some very economical overs and Caithlynn Boler and Eluned Davies were tireless in the field. It was a really terrific team effort and many congratulations are due to you all.
The hospitality at Frenchay was outstanding. The quality of the cricket played in this competition has risen sharply over the past few years and many thanks must go to the Lady Taverner’s for providing these wonderful opportunities for young people to play sport. The competition was slickly run by Jo Kirk of the ECB and on both days tournament organiser, Andy Lees from the ECB was a great ambassador for the game. The pink Lady Taverners T shirts and hats awarded to all competitors were hugely envied by the manager the winners had wonderful medals and a trophy and a trophy too!!! Many, many thanks to all who made these two days wonderfully memorable for us all.
