LEADERS Tavistock avoided a potential banana skin at Stoke Gabriel, where they beat the divisional table proppers by five wickets.
Stoke looked anything but relegation fodder as they reached 153 for five – Mark Gilmour (54) and Mark Newman (25) putting on 76 after Kris Davis (26) got early runs.
James McGahey (3-20) was a bit too quick for the lower order and with Jamie Stephens (2-37) and Lee Baker chipping in, Stoke were all out for 175.
Tavvy made sedate progress towards the target, aided by Ian Gray’s 58 and Stephens’ 37.
There was sill a bit to do after Gray went at 110 for five, but Rob Milligan (11no) and Thoko Peter (29no) did it with nine overs to go.
It is second-placed Thorverton this Saturday in a game which could determine Tavvy’s prospects.
Skipper Shaun Daymond said there is room for improvement on the Stoke performance, not that he was too critical.
“We started poorly and they went off to a flyer – I think they were 100 for two with 26 overs left,” said Daymond.
“We kept our consistency in our bowling and fielding which once again won us the game.
“Ian Gray batted really well, as did Jamie Stephens, and it was great to see Thoko get us through.
“There is a big game coming up - win that one and we are in a great position.”
