Tavistock make Brixham work for win

TAVISTOCK skipper Shaun Daymond didn’t lose too much sleep over a two-wicket defeat by Brixham in a low scoring game at the Ring.

Tavvy were bowled out for 77 – and Brixham lost eight wickets knocking them off.

“Our covers blew off the pitch before the match and it was proper wet out there,” said Daymond.

“Losing the toss and batting first didn’t help as you would like to bat second in those conditions.

“Had they knocked over our batsman hitting the stumps perhaps it would be cause to worry.

“Six of our wickets were either caught behind or in the slips, which is credit to good bowling not poor batting.

“And when we bowled we made them work for it. We had Brixham 33 for six and 53 for eight, at which point we were favourites to win.

“The difference between the sides was Stuart Edgar for them, who went in at 13 for and made 35 not out as they toppled over the line.”

Aaron Churchill top scored for Tavvy with 27. Only Jay Stevens (15) and Shaun Cleave (13) got past double figures.

South African pacer Matt McGilvray’s three wickets for five runs in 10 overs pinned Tavvy down at one end.

Mark Orchard (3-16) and Lee Upham (2-23) did the damage at the other.

It was a similar story when Brixham batted as Jay Stevens (4-20), Jamie Stephens (2-27) and Lee Baker (2-12) didn’t let them settle.

Upham came in at 53 for eight and kept Edgar company as the winning runs were whittled away.
