Devon lose Holman for 79 en route to 200

THERE was been no action between lunch and tea at St Austell in the game between Cornwall and Devon.

However, umpires Mallone and Calloway resumed play at half past four.

There was no play at all on day one at Wheal Eliza due to severe waterlogging.

Play started on time at 10.30 this morning and Devon were batting after skipper Chris Bradley called correctly and decided to go in first.

Within a hour it had started to drizzle, but the two sides carried on regardless, hoping conditions would improve.

First man out for Devon was opener James Burke, whose middle stump was knocked over by Alex Smeeth for an 18-ball duck.

Next to go was Rob Woodman, whose middle peg was not just flattened by shattered as well by left-armer Smeeth.

Third-wicket pair Rob Holman and David Lye advanced the score to 49 before Smeeth struck again. The casualty was Lye, who went fishing outside off-stump and went caught behind.

Surviving opener Holman and Seb Benton added 34 for the fourth wicket, taking Devon to 83 for four.

The stand ended when Benton was given out lbw for six to spinner Ben Kitt.

In the hour before lunch the teams played through light showers. Conditions worsened during lunch and play was halted for mopping up to take place.

Holman was 69 not out at lunch from 127 balls in a Devon total of 132 for four. He went on to reach 79 before Smeeth trapped him lbw.

The latest score from St Austell is Devon 200 for five with Josh Bess (37) and Matt Thompson (21) the not out batters
