Exeter skipper repeats promotion intent

EXETER skipper Jon Tipper has his sights firmly fixed on bringing Premier cricket back to the County Ground next season.

After yesterday's round of fixtures - Exeter were rained off at Brixham - the city side were top of the table with wins and a winning draw in the bag.

Tipper accepts his side hasn't had too many tests so far - the draw with Plympton was the toughest game to date - but can see momentum building.

And, if all goes according to play, Exeter will back in the top flight in 2013 after a two-year break.

'Last season we had a dreadful start and I don't think we won a game in May,' said Tipper.

'It took a 10-wicket defeat at Abbotskerswell, when we didn't get a point out of the game, to give us the kick up the backside we needed.

'By the end of the season we were up to third and another couple of points would have seen us promoted.

'It was a lesson learned and one we have tried to put into practice since. In league cricket every point is vital.

'We saw how Torquay won the A Division last season and trying to copy their methods.

'Torquay didn't lose a game all season and of the four they drew were only second best in two of them.

'We want to win every game, if we can't we want to screw every point we can out of the match. That was the lesson of missing out on promotion by two points.'

Tipper believes Exeter are a tighter unit this season with a hard core of players forming the 1st XI squad.

'When we picked the side to play Brixham we couldn't get in Matt Williamson, Jack Richardson, Alvin Pollard, Alec Bosomworth or Tshepo Legodi - all of whom would walk into most 1st XIs in the A Division,' said Tipper.

'If we have a gap to fill we have good options. It isn't a case of worrying about who we are bringing in and whether they are up to it.

'I think the overall strength of the club is reflected in our 2nd XI being top of their division as well.

'Our ground is Premiership shape, our playing infrastructure is in place to support Premier cricket, all we have to do is deliver it.'
