IT was perhaps appropriate after so much cricket was washed-out by rain last summer, that the South Devon Youth Cricket League presentation night took place during a torrential downpour.
Around 300 people turned out to support the event which was held at the Grand Hotel, Torquay.
The guest of honour was Tim Western – high performance coach for the Devon Lions – who gave an insightful talk about the skills that young players needed to develop to progress to the highest level, before handing out nearly 200 trophies.
In the Under 11 age groups, Paignton defeated Bovey Tracey to win the A Division with Kingsbridge, Torquay and Ipplepen all finishing the season with more wins than losses.
In the B Division Bovey Tracey completed all 10 of their games and remained unbeaten to clinch the title, while Lustleigh won their first piece of youth league silverware finishing as runners-up.
The Under 13 A Division was won by Barton who won six of the eight games they managed to play. Bovey Tracey and Paignton were left cursing the weather as both teams were unbeaten, but only completed four of their scheduled nine games.
Ipplepen and Kingskerswell both went through the B Division season unbeaten, but the title went to Ipplepen – with seven wins out of seven. They claimed top spot ahead of ‘Kerswell with five wins out of five.
There was no debating that Bovey Tracey were worthy winners in the Under 15 A Division, just squeezing past Paignton by eight points with Abbotskerswell back in third.
The B Division was won by Brixham, who fulfilled all six of their games, with Barton second having played one game less.
The Under 17 A Division was won by Ipplepen, who managed to defeat all their near rivals to claim the title. Abbotskerswell were runners-up.
Unbeaten Brixham won the B Division division title ahead of Kingskerswell.
After all the team and individual trophies had been handed out, there was just time for a final couple of special awards.
The first of these was the President’s Trophy – a new award for 2012 awarded to an individual player, coach or club who have upheld the spirit of cricket.
The award went South Devon CC for their efforts in re-starting a junior cricket programme with two teams of players who had mostly never played cricket before. Sadly, no one from the Newton Abbot club was able to make the presentations.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Herald Express-sponsored outstanding contribution to youth cricket award to a very surprised Sue Steart.
Steart is well known in cricket circles as the driving force behind girls’ cricket in South Devon. As well as managing and coaching the District U13 and U15 teams, she has also started the first all-girls team in the South Devon Youth League.
